
El Dr. Silvio Pantoja Gutiérrez se desempeña como Director de COPAS Sur-Austral donde previamente fue subdirector durante el periodo 2008-2012. Anteriormente, entre los años 1983-1985 realizó investigación en Química de Productos Naturales en el Departamento de Botánica de la Universidad de Concepción, Chile. Posteriormente, se desempeñó en investigación oceanográfica para proyectos FONDECYT en la Universidad Católica de Concepción, Chile (1985-1988). A partir del año 1989 fue asistente de producción en la empresa Pesquera Pacto SA. en Maullín, Chile (1989-?). Ejerció como ayudante de docencia (1990-1991) y ayudante de investigación NFS (1992-1997) en State University of New York, Stony Brook, Estados Unidos, institución donde obtuvo el grado de Master y Doctorado. En Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos, se desempeñó como Investigador Post-Doctoral (años). Posteriormente, el año 2000 se integró a la Universidad de Concepción, Concepción, Chile, en calidad de profesor asociado y profesor titular desde 2007 a la actualidad.

Estudio de las moléculas orgánicas de origen biológico disueltas en el agua de mar o atrapadas en el fondo oceánico. Geoquímica orgánica marina, degradación bioquímica de biopolímeros en el océano, registro sedimentario de biomarcadores orgánicos moleculares indicadores de cambios en oxigenación, en temperatura y en metabolismo microbiano y flujos de sedimentación de materia orgánica en la columna de agua.
