El Dr. Fabián Tapia Jorquera actualmente ocupa el cargo de Subdirector de COPAS Sur-Austral y profesor asociado del Departamento de Oceanografía de la Universidad de Concepción. Anteriormente, entre 2005 y 2007 integró el Departamento de Ecología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile en calidad de investigador asociado. Posteriormente, el año 2008 ingresó a COPAS Sur-Austral como Investigador asociado y a partir de 2013 como investigador principal de la línea Variabilidad ambiental y patrones ecosistémicos asociados con aportes de agua dulce en los fiordos Patagónicos.

Líneas de investigación

Variabilidad física en el océano costero y su modulación en la distribución y dinámica poblacional de especies marinas, en particular sobre especies bentónicas sésiles o con limitada movilidad en la fase adulta, y cuyo ciclo reproductivo incluye una fase larval de desarrollo planctónico. La persistencia y variabilidad temporal en la abundancia de poblaciones con este tipo de ciclo de vida están fuertemente influenciadas por los patrones de variabilidad en condiciones hidrodinámicas (corrientes costeras, turbulencia, oleaje) y físico-químicas (temperatura, oxígeno disuelto, disponibilidad de alimento), que determinan ritmos reproductivos, duración del desarrollo planctónico, patrones de dispersión y transporte larval, y finalmente las escalas de conectividad entre poblaciones marinas.
