Carina B. Lange is a Professor at the Department of Oceanography, University of Concepción (UdeC, Concepción, Chile), and an Associate Investigator at the Center for Oceanographic Research COPAS Sur-Austral and the Research Center Dynamics of High Latitude Marine Ecosystems (IDEAL). She is also a Research Associate at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (California, USA) and a Research Fellow at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Naples, Italy).
Dr. Lange holds a doctorate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Her principal research interests lie in the fields of paleoclimatology and paleoceanography. She uses the records of plankton communities (mainly diatoms) encoded in the marine sediments to interpret past ocean productivity in relation to climatic conditions. Her research interests also include the transformations associated with the settling of biogenic material from the uppermost layers of the ocean to the seafloor, the role of diatom resting stages in population dynamics, and laminated Quaternary sedimentary records. Her publication list includes 90 articles since 1985. Dr. Lange has ample sea-going experience in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. She has established strong scientific and educational collaborations with colleagues in Germany, Italy, USA and Japan.
Dr. Lange is involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching in geological oceanography as well as mentoring of graduate students at UdeC. Since 2001, she has been the advisor of 7 PhD and 5 MSc theses. Additionally, she has been a lecturer of the “Advanced Phytoplankton Course, Taxonomy and Systematics” (APC) since 1995. Dr. Lange is a member of the Graduate Committee in Oceanography at UdeC, the evaluation committee for postdocs and graduate students at CONICYT (Santiago, Chile), and the Capacity Building Task Team of IMBER.
